Endless engines

This project was my submission for Clinton Jones’ (Pwnisher) Endless Engines challenge, and I’m very grateful to say that it made the top 100 out of over 4,200 submissions! The community ran render challenges are something Clint does every 6 months, this one specifically centering on creating your own vehicle and story within a template file given. These community challenges always bring together an incredible collection of beautiful 3D art. I am very honored that my piece was selected to be a part of that top 100.

As I was creating this piece, I prioritized the storytelling to be at the center, telling the story of a mushroom father and son travelling around the world in a makeshift vehicle crafted from their house. All of the assets I created from scratch, by sculpting in ZBrush, and texturing in Substance Painter, making sure it felt hand painted.

When I started animating, my main goal was to make it look almost like stop motion, or be animated on twos. The character animation was created from multiple motion capture clips that I spliced together, in addition to adding that skip frame effect on top. Last step was to light it in Redshift, with the look of a warm glow in mind.

I’m extremely happy with how this turned out, and I’m honored it was selected as part of the top 100!
